Yann Normand

Born in Québec in 1974, Yann Normand began his career in the arts through drawing and painting. Heavily influenced by industrial materials and the desire to work in three dimensions, Normand began using steel, welding the medium to create intricate and complex compositions.

For over a decade, Normand collaborated with fellow artist, Nancy Ferland. The duo worked in painting, steel sculpting and bronze casting, until the partnership ended due to Ferland’s death. Today, Normand draws on his personal experience, allowing energy and strength to be expressed through the creative fire, giving birth to new ideas and works.

Yann Normand is a sculptor who aims to create coherence between substance and form through all the mediums he explores. Working with everything from aluminum, wood, rubber, mirror and feathers, steel has always been a central medium in Normand’s work to which others are grafted. Whether it is the intricate welding of hundreds of pieces steel, or the use of hundreds of feathers meticulously assembled, the artist turns fragments into forms emerging straight from Normand’s imagination.  It is through this process that energy and movement become tangible in his works. The artist’s end goal is to represent the dichotomous relationships ever present in our changing environment. His work demonstrates a sincere relationship between the artist and his environment, creating works that are melancholic, romantic, and paradoxically industrial.

Normand is humbly inspired by the balance between natural forces, silence, spirituality and industrial elements. He strives to produce work that is honest, authentic and scalable, as each sculpture requires him to pour his heart and soul into the process of creation. His practice begins with an idea, however, once the idea is integrated and felt, he does not allow contingencies to disturb his creative course. He creates a physical universe that is impervious to disruptive elements, where he has full control over the creation of his works.
